I want my work to arouse people’s emotions and evoke a stimulating and uniquely individual reaction; not with political rhetoric or social issues, but by involving them with the colour, shapes, lines and textures they see on the canvas. Working in a non representational mode enables me a degree of escapism to express myself purely through colour and form.
Vibrant colour plays the most important role in my work and the physical act of painting gives me the greatest satisfaction. Whilst working with the canvas on the floor I like to build up the surface of the painting; layering the paint by pouring, spraying and moving the acrylic paint around with rags. There is a certain amount of indeterminacy and spontaneity in my work, not knowing how the paint will move or blend intrigues me. When I am satisfied with the background colour and surface, I then like to add dots of paint in various shapes and patterns, which adds another dimension to my work and a different way of working, a little more controlled but still quite random.
