TANYA TIER

Like millions of people around the world I was horrified at the decision taken by the US and UK governments to invade Iraq. Having grown up in the middle east - and with friends and family still living there - I take a keen interest in the region. When Tony Blair decided to ignore the biggest global protest in history, I wanted to channel my anger into something constructive. I used to do a lot of satirical sketch-writing for the theatre, but after a while I found that I’d run out of ways to describe the sheer madness of the situation. As a result, I turned back to visual art. Once the war started, the ideas kept coming with each new story that broke. I found that I was producing my own narrative of the conflict…like keeping a visual diary of events over the last four years.

CV

Work as Artist and Designer

After studying art and video production in London, Tanya worked in the advertising and TV industries for several years.

As well as creating and exhibiting various forms of artwork during this period, Tanya has written and produced her own TV sketches and short films, often featuring stop-frame animation. In recent years Tanya’s work has become more political, and she has a track record of writing critically-acclaimed satirical humour for TV and theatre. She has recently been exploring her early passion for cartoons, and dipped a toe in the murky world of political cartooning.
