Changing Times, Challenging Times
Dignity – Life – Equality

The north east of England has been selected to host the LGBT Health Summit in 2009. The LGBT Health Summit is a key national event founded in 2006 to provide a safe, supportive and exciting space for individuals, organisations and activists to come together to discuss, debate and challenge thinking and practice on LGBT health issues in the UK.

The 2009 Summit will be the fourth such event and will provide a key opportunity to promote LGBT Health issues and showcase what's going on in the north east, to around 200 delegates from across the UK. It will take place on the 6th and 7th October 2009 at the Hilton Hotel, on the banks of the river Tyne. The Summit is being hosted by NHS North East with the support of a growing number of regional and national partners including the "NHS North East LGB Staff Network", and "Equality North East".

The key objectives of the 2009 Summit are to:

1.    Raise awareness of differences in health outcomes  affecting LGBT people.

2.    Share ideas and good practice regarding the removal of barriers to both service access and employment for LGBT people.

3.    Focus on the specific and differing needs of a broad range of LGBT people and issues affecting them.

4.    Foster partnership working within and beyond LGBT communities and to make recommendations about improving health outcomes for LGBT people.

5.    Build on previous summits and prepare for the future legacy.

Do you or your organisation want to be involved?

You can deliver a workshop, presentation, research paper, demonstration or stage a performance or poster presentation

on the following issues:

a.   Health and social care needs: for older people, young people in or leaving care, people in poor housing and the homeless.

b.    Inclusion and exclusion within the LGBT communities: particularly black and minority ethnic (BME) and faith communities, communities of physical and sensory impairment, bisexuals, transvestites and cross-dressers and people with learning difficulties.

c.    Equality and human rights or false expectations: equality and human rights in action, building bridges of commonalities between all strands of diversity, moving the transgender agenda forward.

d.   The Big Divide: contrasting good practice in rural and urban conurbation settings, lifelong action on health improvements, mental health or mental wellbeing an issue of stigma, prejudice and discrimination, and alcohol and drugs - the cause of problems or the symptom.

Steering Group

The organisation of the Summit is a major challenge, not least because we need to maintain, and hopefully improve, on the very high standards of previous events. To help do this we have close links to the organisers of the previous events, and havte established a diverse Steering Group of volunteers  who have committed their time and expertise to make the event a success

Stakeholder Group

The Steering Group is supported by a stakeholder group which is open to all those with an interest in supporting the event, including representatives from health service providers, the LGBT community, the voluntary sector, trade unions, academia and many, many more. Two meetings of the Stakeholder Group have already been held.

If you are interested in becoming a member of our stakeholder group or you would like to join our distribution list to receive our regular newsletter updates which will be launched shortly please email lgbthealthsummit@northeast.nhs.uk with your name and contact details.
