According to the 71st Regiment of Foot Depot Battalion at Stirling Castle's quarterly pay-list January - Mar 1859 John McLaren no 1379 died whilst on furlough at Crieff on 17 January 1859.
Have searched with others Scotlandspeople for the whole of Scotland, Crieff records, Perth records and even the English indexes as his wife was in Berwick but have found no death registration for him.
Would the 71st have accepted his death without proof? Where else can we look?
Any help with his man would be much appreciated as we have very little on him except he enlisted in Crieff on 13 January 1840 and was married at the Lamberton Toll in 1847. His wife remarried in 1861 another soldier from the 71st.
Several years ago went to Kew but couldn't find his service docs.
Any advice or assistance would be much appreciated.
Thank you.
Have you checked with all the local parishes in Crieff? It's possble that his death would have been registered at his home parish as he was on leave to possibly visiting his parents.
