RE: Insulin Pumps by Sarah - written 25/04/2008 22:08:58

Hey, I'm a type one diabetic too, I'm 19 and have had it for 7 years, and live in Lancaster. I'm currently using Exubera- inhaled insulin, but the company that produces it are having to withdraw it due to lack of demand. I'm terrified of needles and really can't face going back to 4 injections a day like i used to, so am about to trial the Medtronic Paradigm Real Time pump. I say trial because for my area I'm allowed to try it, but if improvements in blood sugar control aren't seen fairly quickly, I won't be allowed to continue using it because of how expensive it is. I must say I'm extremely nervous about using it because of the needle phobia, and I'm not sure I could get my head around the idea of having something attached to me all of the time, however I am willing to give it a go, and am kind of looking forward to the flexibility.

Just thought it'd be nice to keep in touch with someone else who will be using a pump soon (assuming you eventually get it! good luck! i think my wait is expected to be around two months)

Hi.

I am a Type 1 Diabetic and have been for all my life basically 36 years. I am currently seen at High Wycombe General Hospital which I have found excellent. Approlx 2 months ago my doctor put me forward to go on a Medtronic Paradigm 722 Insulin Pump which would be funded by my local PCT due to the fact that I meet the "NICE" criteria/guidelines. The problem is that Berkshire PCT are still dragging their heels and not signing off the payment to Medtronic - Typical. I have contacted my local MP Theresa May who is going to see what the problem is and why it is taking so long. One of my freinds was also put forward for a pump but lives in Buckinghamshire (Basically 2 miles away from me) and received his pump within 2 weeks.

I have never been on an insulin pump so it is quite scarey to be honest but I am looking forward to getting it and inproving my blood sugars.

I am very interested to hear from any Diabetics who have the Medtronic Insulin Pump or the Animas 2020 Pump which also looks excellent.

Of course I will keep you updated on my progress in the forum and on my "Blog".
