Thanks, Michael, that seems a good way to start. We could use that tomorrow. Laurence, if you're reading this, remind me, ok ?

I reckon the ultimate way to play it would be - first team throw one stick, then the other team throws 2, then the first team throws 3, the other team throws 4, first team 5 and then always 6 from then on.

Hmmmmm. Thanks Laurence and Phil. I'll do some research. I feel that 3 is NOT enough for the first team. Watch this space.

When on holiday in Sweden a few years back I purchased a kubb set, in the rules it states that the team to go first is chosen by throwing a stick as close to the king as possible, the closer stick's thrower goes first. It also states that one may only throw at the king to win if one has two sticks remaining, this negates the possibility of winning on the first turn bar a miracle throw which knocks over two blocks on the baseline.

Is there still time to get a motion put in front of the International Rules Committee before the South-West games begin? I don't want to cause a stir mid-way through the season. This sort of thing gives Formula 1 enough problems; goodness knows what it might do to Kubb. Perhaps it's better delayed until the off-season, when a full and proper analysis can be done.
I'd still plump for a half-turn (3 sticks) for the initial chuck. That shouldn't disadvantage the opening team, who should still be able to make a start, but without overbalancing the game.

How's your sleep pattern?

Neil wrote (17/06/2011 17:07:32):

A fair point. Technically speaking you could win the game with your first 6 throws. I'd say first team only throws 5 might be fairer.

I'm probably going to lose sleep over this one now !

Laurence wrote (17/06/2011 15:54:58):

This probably isn't a problem for the casual player, but I have heard that amongst better players there is a definite advantage to going first. To reduce this perceived advantage, why not have the first team only throw 3 sticks on their first turn? This would help to alleviate the problem.
Just a thought.
Laurence

We have always played that both teams throw one stick closest to the king at the same time (count of 3) and the closest goes first. If you knock the king down the other team automatically start first but you don't loose the game in this instance. These are the same rules used at the world tournament in Sweden when we were there last year, and a few thousand Sweeds can't be wrong! Sure its an advantage, but all part of the game.

I think on the first go you have to have one stick spare to throw at the king but we never knocked down 5 on the first go anyway. That doesn't apply on any other goes.
