What is real worship?
This thought has been pretty big with me for a while. Recently I turned up some notes I had jotted down over a year ago after one of our Prayer evenings led by the Y1 team. This is what I had written and although they are my thoughts they may strike a chord with you, too.
Worship - our worship of God - as closely as I can understand and articulate it from my own perspective, is when my heart, at a spiritual level, connects with the heart of God: like two hearts beating with a single rhythm... Music often, but not exclusively, facilitates this.
For me worship is not about words and music... it is much more than mere words and music. It is the rhythm of two hearts in perfect unity... mine and God's. When I truly worship God from my heart it is then that I fulfill my main purpose in life - to glorify Him and enjoy Him!
Is there anything more wonderful than when two hearts connect in this way? It is my absolute privilege and, Christian responsibility, to connect with God at the place where my purpose and my desire (my longing to please God) are perfectly aligned with His requirement of my life. I often reflect on the words of the following song which I think very beautifully describe worship.
When the music fades, all is stripped away and I simply come; longing just to bring something that's of worth that will bless Your heart. I'll bring you more than a song, for a song in itself, is not what You have required. You search much deeper within. Through the way things appear; You're looking into my heart. I'm coming back to the heart of worship and it's all about You, all about You, Jesus. I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it when it's all about You, all about You, Jesus.
Amen
