I think we already
have a single profession in that the distinction between solicitors and
barristers is not as profound as a few years ago. Many solicitors now
appear in courts (previously the domain of barristers alone), even the
higher courts, and many barristers just give advice without appearing
in court. Solicitors who appear in higher courts can now wear a wig and
gown. Barristers can now be engaged directly in some cases.

I suppose for the public it would be good to have one profession to avoid confusion.
