RE: Car free living

I whole-heartedly agree with you on this Alison.
I too feel that cars divide community living, notice that if 2 pedestrians bump into each other, both with mumble 'sorry' embarassed, however as soon as they're behind the wheel of a car, the attitude to a small bump turns into road rage!
I also love travelling by train and wish they would lower the fares. I'm lucky as I can use my 16-25 Railcard which gets me a third off fares, however it can still be expensive.

Great to hear about this group. I've never had a car and have raised a family (now 18 and 21) without a car. Admittedly we live in London and cycle but it can be done. I feel cars divide communities, busy roads stop neighbours from meeting and the streets are often pedestrian free at night because everyone travels in cars thus creating a vicious cycle of 'it's dangerous to walk at night so we'll take the car' so fewer people are about to create a good atmosphere. Even in London I know of only one other family without a car! I think people consider us rather mad that we do without one. Oh and by the way we love trains and why the hell don't they reduce the fares so you don't have to be a millionaire to use them.
