McCombich Stewarts by margaretkipp@rogers.com - written 18/05/2016 23:39:34

Hi:

I am descended from the Stewarts of Appin.  Our particular "branch" emigrated from Appin to the area of Lawers on Lochtayside.  They used the alias "the companions" from about 1750 to about 1850 and then reverted to "Stewart".  They were the companions to a Stewart lady who was sent over to marry one of the Breadalbane Campbells.  The variations I have seen for the Gaelic companion in church records include: Combich, Chombich, McCombich, McChombich.  There were McCombichs at Cullonden and also McCombich witnesses at the trial of James of the Glen.  It seems that this last name and its variations are limited to Appin and Lochtayside.  Any info appreciated.  Margaret
