tracing the history of Alexander Mclaren born 1827 by Elizabeth warren - written 26/07/2015 10:17:54

My name is Elizabeth Warren and I live in Perth, Western Australia. Early September 2015,  I will be visiting Scotland to see if I can trace the roots of my great grand father, Alexander Mclaren or Maclauren or even Mclaurin. The records are very difficult to trace but it is believed, Alexander Mclaren was born 25/12/1827  in Port Appin and batptised 31/1/1828 in Lismore, although I now understand this the parish of Lismore Appin and Duror. Alexander is the son of unmarried parents Duncan Mclaren (born C1796) of Lismore and Elizabeth Campbell (born C1797 - 19/12/1883) of Port Appin.I think Duncan Mclaren is the son of Alexander Mclaren and Mary Stewart married 28/4/1794 and Eliabeth is the daughter of John Campbell  and Annie McDonald unsure when they married. John Campbell was a ferryman in Port Appin.

A review of the 1841 Scotland Census shows Alexander was living with his mother and 2 Aunties, Jean and  Margaret Campbell in Port Appin however, I am unable to locate any further information about Duncan Mclaren. It appears they never married .Alexander came to Sydney, Australia when unknown and married Eliza Drennan 1869 in the Scots Church (Presbyterian) . They had three daughters Eliza Mary Mclaren born 1869, Margaret Campbell Mclaren born 1871 and Betsy (Bessie) Teresa Mclaren  1873. Bessie is my mothers mother- my grand mother. It is also believed he was a Sea Captain on the Australia to England run up until c1888 and when Eliza unexpectantly passed away 1879,  the three girls lived in an orphanage/Girls home whilst there father was away.Alexander passed away 30 January 1898 in Sydney Australia.

I was wondering if the church he was baptised in still exists. I would love to get in touch with any possible relatives that may still live in the area r if anyone has any knowledge of this family.  Many Thanks
