Experts of the Month

October Expert
La Diosa

First up is the lovely ladies from La Diosa – a company dedicated to making the most beautiful and original jewellery from semi-precious stones. Since launching their business only a matter of two years ago, Natasha Faith and Semhal Zemikael have achieved huge success.

Not only have they won a number of awards, but their jewellery now sold in Harvey Nichols London and their pieces have been worn by the Prime Minister's wife, Sarah Brown, and international superstars Alicia Keys and Leona Lewis.
Both Semhal and I have always been very independent women and have always dreamed about running our own business and knew that working for someone else was always going to be temporary. There is that small voice in every entrepreneurs mind that says "You can do better ..." and eventually shouts, "I will do this better!"

"Our inspiration for La Diosa came from our years travel visiting places such as Tokyo, Thailand and Belize, but it was mainly living in Mexico for six months that gave us our initial idea."

- Natasha Faith
Once we came back from travelling, we approached The Prince's Trust with our ideas. They gave us a Business Development Manager who mentored us and helped prepare us for the world of enterprise. The Trust then gave us a small loan that provided us with enough capital to launch La Diosa.

TIP ALERT:
We conducted a lot of market research before the launch, as we needed to be sure that we were aiming at the right demographic and that our product had a place in the market. Jewellery has a huge market, but it is also highly saturated, therefore a strong brand identity and value in a product are some of the most important factors to include in a business. I would also advise you to look at where the opportunities in your market lie and what you're customers will expect from your product or service.

The best business advice we received is to always stay inspired. This is so crucial as you can sometimes feel under pressure when you are running your own business, but if you can manage to stay inspired by reading, writing and travelling you feel more positive and creative. As long as you feel inspired it's difficult not to be motivated.

'Think smaller...' This is hands down the worst advice you can give someone who is aiming for success! I believe that a true entrepreneur is constantly aiming for the true height s of success and in order to achieve this you have to think BIG – but be realistic and take calculated risks.

My advice to other budding entrepreneurs is to be passionate about your business and learn the art of delegation as it is impossible to do everything on your own! Make sure you don't forget to give back when you can and always surround yourself with like-minded people.

About the Prince's Trust

Did you know around one in five young people (aged between 14 and 30) in the UK are not in work, education or training. Youth unemployment costs the UK economy £10million a day in lost productivity, while youth crime costs £1billion every year.

The Prince's Trust addresses this problem by giving practical and financial support to the young people who need it the most. They help develop key skills, confidence and motivation, enabling young people to move into work, education or training. Mr Site works alongside The Prince's Trust to offer free and discounted Takeaway Website packages to those applying for grants. The Small Business Consultancy

Created by Amar Lodhia

Amar Lodhia is the founder of 'The Small Business Consultancy'

"The idea for my company came from two sources – one of the students I helped get an apprenticeship at my previous workplace came from a very disadvantaged and adverse background. They said me: 'My dad would really benefit from a programme like this,' and naturally my brain started ticking – but having a busy time at work I pushed my thoughts to the back of my head.

Then, one day a friend in the local government told me that I should work with vulnerable adults and that there are lots of opportunities with their commissioning team to do so; so I ran home, put up a Mr Site website in an hour, wrote a proposal and three days later we had our first big contract.
The best advice I can give other entrepreneurs is...a true business-person and entrepreneur is someone who will start their entrepreneurial journey by exploiting their skills, strengths and knowledge.

Remember, you can make money by doing something that you love. Also, what do we mean when we say 'wealth'? To me, it's not money. It's everything that you have left when there is no money – your respect, knowledge, skills, strengths and wisdom. So, if you are a wealthy person; stop sitting there and go and exploit your strengths and the money will follow."

Website of the Month

Isabelle Blondiau

November's Website of the Month goes to Isabelle Blondiau, who created www.isabee.co.uk

This website has been chosen for its sleek and appealing look – not to mention it's well planned approached means it's to navigate around. Congratulations Isabee...your website is brilliant!!

"It all began by when trying to create interesting clothes for my children to play in and with. I then found that their friends wanted some too and I soon realised there was a demand. Just about everything I sell is handmade, which has been designed to look and feel magical to provide a broad scope of creative play.

I was really excited about setting up Isabee, as I could be creative and throw myself into the thing I love doing. I also really hope to fire the imagination of both children and parents with original and inspiring clothes and dressing up.

My Mr Site website is a great shop window. I feel it is essential to have an online presence and its invaluable to sell my products with the click button. With ongoing promotions isabee.co.uk now gets regular traffic and has generated sales throughout the year, not just at peak times, like Christmas."
If you'd like to be the next Website of Month, all you need to do is submit yourself on Mr Site's official forum – click here to find out more information and join the community.
