Abdul’s table tips

The support team get a lot of questions and emails from customers about how they can make their web pages look a bit more professional and structured. Sometimes, you might design a page, then publish and it doesn’t quite look the way you expected...the nature of the internet! So what can help with this? Tables! By inserting a table into your web pages, it gives you more control over the final look of your page and can ensure that your website will look the same whatever browser your visitors are using. Abdul from the Support Team has kindly offered his top tips on how to insert tables into your web pages:

‘This guide will show you how you can insert a basic table in to your Takeaway Website in the ‘Change Content’ option – found on the Main Options page. Inserting tables are useful for keeping your text and images in line, thus giving a much more professional appearance to your pages. Once you have selected ‘Change Content’ and selected the page you would like to edit, please make sure that you select ‘Creative’ from the drop down list in the right hand corner above the main paint box area.

Now, use the following instructions below to help you get started…

From the third row of icons above the paint box, click on ‘Insert Table’ – see the image below:

You will now have two options – you can either select the number of columns and rows you would like by highlighting the popup box that appears (by dragging your mouse across the grid, you will see the number of columns and rows you have selected at the bottom of the popup box) or you can click on the ‘Table Wizard’ button.

If you use the ‘Table Wizard’, you will be able to add or remove columns and rows in the table by clicking the horizontal and vertical ‘+’ and ‘-’ buttons. Here, you can also merge cells together by clicking either of the horizontal and vertical ‘+’ and ‘-’ buttons under ‘Span’, as well as change the width and height of the cells. Be as creative as you like, then click ‘OK’ – Mr Site will automatically insert your created table into the paint box area. Let’s say, for example, you’ve selected a table that is three columns long and one row deep, it should look like this in the ‘Change Content’ option:

If you want to make your table bigger, simply highlight the whole table and drag your mouse out in the bottom right hand corner. Now you can start inserting your images and text! For text, simply type in the boxes and for images, just click on the relevant box; right click on your mouse, select ‘Insert’ from the list and then ‘Image’. Alternatively, you can copy and paste an image or text into this box.

Sometimes, adding images and text can be tricky as the Takeaway Website table editor can align your pictures or text by default in a way that may not be to your taste.

However, there’s an easy way to avoid this – when you insert a table, Mr Site will automatically create a table 500 pixels wide. If you insert pictures into the cells of this table that are smaller in size than the total width of the table, the Mr Site table editor will left align the table contents in a way that may not look neat. To prevent this from happening, click on your tables, then on the ‘Table’ button at the bottom of the paint box. Select ‘Properties’ from the menu and the Table Wizard will appear. Next, click on the ‘Table’ tab. In the ‘Width’ box change the figure to 100 and click ‘OK’.

When you return to ‘Change Content’, your table will not appear as wide as before, but you can just click on your new table and drag it to the size you require. Once you have adjusted your table size, when you insert an image or text into these table cells, they will automatically expand to neatly hug your image or text. This will mean your table, cell and web page layout will always look well aligned, neat, tidy and professional.’

That’s just a few tips for you think about...but if get really confident, have a look at the Appendix section in your Takeaway Website manual for more great table ideas.

Website of the month

Guénaëlle & Gordon Fairbrother

Congratulations to Guénaëlle & Gordon Fairbrother, who built www.lemoulindelimayrac.com for their bed and breakfast in the South of France. You’re Mr Site’s Website of the Month! Guénaëlle tells us a bit more how their website has helped the business:
‘Le moulin de Limayrac is a Chambres d’hôtes (bed and breakfast) & Gîte business located in South of France – in the very pretty and undiscovered region of Aveyron.

It was very important for us to have a website that allowed us to remain in control of the content. Like product packaging – website designs need to be updated and refreshed regularly to maintain customer interest and we also need to be able to change prices and availability on a regular basis. With Mr Site, this is all possible. I’m so pleased with the website I created and have learnt a lot very quickly – with help from the Mr Site support team I finished it in no time. The templates available are great as I was able to get our brand ‘personality’ into the website without compromise. Overall, it is very rewarding when our customers mention that they really like the website and the number of visitors to our website keeps increases month by month.’

If you'd like to be the next Website of Month all you need to do is submit your story by emailing us here and tell us why you deserve the award!
